What is Schema Therapy

Schema Therapy was developed by Jeffrey Young and combines elements from other approaches , including CBT, Attachment theories and Gestalt therapy.

Schemas are organized patterns of thought and behaviour that have been learned during childhood and maintained through out adult life . If the person’s basic emotional needs are not met during their formative years , schemas and maladaptive coping strategies can develop.

The goals of Schema therapy are:

  • To help the client to heal schemas by diminishing the intensity of emotional memories associated with the schema

  • To change cognitive patterns connected to the schema

  • To replace maladaptive coping strategies with adaptive patterns of behaviours.
